When he was packing up and saying goodbye to the villagers, the girl appeared at a second-floor window, wiping her tears and waving. Overwhelmed with emotion, Dr. Yeom waved back, stating that it was the most rewarding moment of his career as an ophthalmologist. He pledged to continue bringing hope to those in medical blind spots.
Medical volunteering not only restores vision but also gives hope and a renewed will to live to people like the girl and her village. Dr. Yeom's dedication remains a touching example of humanitarianism beyond borders.
Dr. Yeom stated, "The experience of medical volunteering in a remote village in Pakistan in 2014 reinforced my sense of mission as a doctor. Last year, in 2023, I also provided cataract surgery to over 100 patients in Mozambique, gifting them with new vision," smiling happily.
He added, "My goal is to brighten the world through medical technology. I will continue to strive to give the gift of sight to disadvantaged communities both domestically and internationally."
Dr. Yeom emphasized, "We believe it is our mission to return the economic and professional benefits we receive as doctors to society, and we will continue to practice sharing."
Gangnam Smile Eye Clinic staff also participate in Dr. Yeom's charitable efforts. In 2024, Dr. Yeom and several staff members plan to volunteer in Mozambique.
In May, the clinic donated the proceeds from their official YouTube channel 'Omniscient Smile Perspective' and the in-clinic 'Smile Cafe' to the international blindness relief NGO Vision Care.
Dr. Yeom plans to continue his blindness relief activities and medical volunteering with Vision Care in underprivileged medical environments around the world, such as Pakistan and Mozambique, as long as his health permits. 그때 어릴 적 눈에 가시가 들어간 후 시력을 잃었다는 한 17세 소녀를 만나게 되었다. 염원장은 현미경을 통해 소녀의 눈을 정확하게 검사한 후, 수술을 통해 눈에 들어간 가시를 제거하고 가시로 인하여 생긴 백내장까지 제거하는 수술을 통해 소녀는 잃었던 시력을 빛을 회복할 수 있었다.
수술을 통해 시력을 회복한 소녀는 감격의 눈물을 흘리며, 염원장에게 연신 감사 인사를 전했다. 염원장이 짐을 정리하고 마을 사람들에게 작별 인사를 하던 그때, 2층 창가에 나타난 소녀는 연신 눈물을 닦으며 손을 흔들었다. 벅찬 감동에 휩싸인 염원장 역시 손을 흔들며 화답했다. 염원장은 "안과의사로서 가장 보람 있는 순간이었습니다"며, 앞으로도 의료 사각지대에 있는 사람들에게 희망을 전하는 일에 최선을 다할 것을 다짐했다.
의료봉사는 단순한 시력 회복을 넘어, 희망을 잃고 살아가던 소녀와 마을 주민들에게 삶의 의지를 되찾아주는 소중한 기회가 되었다. 염 대표원장의 헌신적인 노력은 국경을 초월한 인류애를 보여주는 감동적인 사례로 남은 것이다.
염동주 대표원장은 “2014년 파키스탄 오지 마을에서 의료 봉사를 펼쳤던 경험은 의사로서의 사명감을 더욱 굳건히 하는 계기가 되었습니다. 2023년 작년에는 아프리카 모잠비크에서도 100여명의 환자들에게 백내장수술을 통해 새로운 시력을 선물 해주었습니다”라며 행복한 미소을 지었다.
덧붙여 “의료 기술을 통해 세상을 밝게 만드는 것이 목표입니다. 앞으로도 국내외 어려운 이웃들에게 밝은 세상을 선물하기 위해 꾸준히 노력할 것”이라고 말했다.
염원장은 “의사로서의 경제적, 직업적 혜택을 사회에 환원하는 것이 저희의 소명이라고 생각하며, 앞으로도 지속적인 나눔을 실천할 것입니다”라고 강조했다.
강남스마일안과 직원들 역시 염원장의 선한 마음에 동참하여, 2024년에는 염원장과 몇명 직원들이 함께 모잠비크에서 안과 의료봉사를 계획하고 있다고 한다.
지난 5월에는 병원 공식 유튜브 채널 ‘전지적 스마일 시점’과 원내 ‘스마일 카페’를 운영해 얻은 수익금을 국제 실명 구호 NGO단체인 비전케어(Vision Care)에 전달하기도 했다.
염동주원장은 비전케어와 함께 앞으로도 체력이 허락하는 한 파키스탄, 모잠비크처럼 취약한 의료환경의 세계 각지를 누비며 실명구호활동 및 의료봉사를 펼칠 계획이라고 한다.
이와 함께 서초경찰서와 연계해 사회적 약자 대상 의료서비스를 지원하고, 넉넉지 못한 형편의 대학생들에게 무료 수술을 지원하는 등 국내에서도 어려움에 처한 이들의 시력 개선과 눈 건강을 위해 애쓰고 있다.
